Une maladie inflammatoire chronique La sclérose en plaques est une maladie inflammatoire chronique du système nerveux. Elle touche actuellement près de deux millions de personnes dans le monde et est la maladie neurologique non-traumatique la plus fréquente chez les jeunes adultes. L'âge moyen d'apparition est de 29 à 33 ans, mais la fourchette totale varie de 10 à 59 ans. La fréquence est plus élevée chez les femmes que chez les hommes: trois femmes en sont atteintes pour deux hommes.
La sclérose en plaques n'est pas une maladie héréditaire, elle n'est pas transmise par voie génétique. Cependant, elle semble favorisée par une certaine 'susceptibilité' génétique, ce qui explique qu'elle est légèrement plus fréquente dans les familles où elle s'est déjà déclarée dans le passé. La maladie est également plus fréquente dans les pays à climat tempéré (Europe et Amérique du Nord), peut-être en fonction d'une susceptibilité spécifique de la population native.
La sclérose en plaques n'est pas caractérisée par une évolution type. Chaque patient présente un ensemble distinct de symptômes, dépendant des zones du système nerveux central affectées. Ces symptômes peuvent varier d'une personne à l'autre, d'une période à l'autre, ainsi qu'en intensité. Les plus courants sont des troubles de la vue, des problèmes d'équilibre et de coordination, des problèmes moteurs, des troubles de la sensibilité.
Les progrès de la recherche Actuellement, on ne guérit pas de la sclérose en plaques. Les moyens à notre disposition permettent juste de freiner l'évolution de la maladie, c'est-à-dire diminuer le nombre et la sévérité des poussées.
C'est dans ce contexte que des chercheurs ont franchi une étape importante en identifiant et en répertoriant un ensemble de gènes (80) impliqués dans les processus inflammatoires et neurodégénératifs de la sclérose en plaques. Cet inventaire des gènes impliqués dans la sclérose en plaques devrait permettre d'améliorer la conception des médicaments, en les rendant plus sûrs et plus efficaces, de mettre à disposition des médecins des solutions thérapeutiques pour des besoins médicaux actuellement non satisfaits, et potentiellement de mieux adapter les traitements à chaque individu.
